Industry 4.0 represents a significant shift in manufacturing, integrating advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and cloud computing. This paper explores manufacturers’ challenges in adopting Industry 4.0 and the adjustments needed to implement it successfully. The study focuses on multiple case studies from Finnish, Polish, and Iranian companies, using smart system techniques and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews to analyze these challenges.
Key findings reveal that businesses face significant obstacles in adopting Industry 4.0, particularly around standardization, management support, skills, and costs. Data interoperability and network externalities are common challenges across companies, with some also facing scalability and information security complexities. The study underscores the importance of understanding organizational and environmental factors before implementing these technologies.
The research also highlights how conventional manufacturing processes must change with Industry 4.0, particularly in areas like IT systems and equipment. However, many participants believe current production practices will not drastically change, though leadership, a clear vision, and fostering a culture of innovation are needed for successful integration. A maturity model developed from this research provides a framework to measure Industry 4.0 adoption and guide businesses in navigating the associated challenges.
