- The 9100 standard builds on ISO 9001 with over 160 additional aerospace-specific requirements focused on safety, reliability, and supply chain control
- IAQG’s Certification Scheme ensures global consistency through industry oversight, strengthening the integrity and trust in 9100-certified organizations
- Tools like OASIS enhance transparency and traceability across the aerospace supply chain, making 9100 certification a hallmark of excellence
ISO 9001 serves as the foundational quality management system (QMS) standard for organizations across industries, setting a global benchmark for delivering consistent and reliable products and services. However, in high-stakes sectors like aerospace, aviation, and defense, ISO 9001 alone does not meet the rigorous requirements for safety and precision. To address these unique demands, the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) developed the 9100 series, an advanced set of standards tailored to the complexities of aerospace operations.
The 9100 builds upon ISO 9001 by adding more than 160 specific requirements designed to tackle critical aerospace concerns. These include provisions for managing critical items and product safety, preventing foreign object debris (FOD), implementing robust change control processes, and strengthening oversight throughout the entire supply chain. Each of these enhancements reflects the non-negotiable standards of reliability and performance that define aerospace quality. The goal is not just to ensure compliance but to embed safety, traceability, and risk mitigation deep into every level of production and supplier management.
A distinguishing feature of the 9100 standard is the IAQG Certification Scheme, which introduces an industry-led approach to oversight. Unlike ISO 9001, which relies on traditional third-party audits, the 9100 system includes participation by aerospace industry representatives who act as Certification Oversight (CO) assessors. These experts help audit accreditation bodies and certification processes to ensure global consistency and prevent discrepancies in interpretation or enforcement. This direct industry involvement reinforces trust and ensures the certification process reflects real-world operational needs.
Supporting all of this is OASIS (Online Aerospace Supplier Information System), a centralized, IAQG-managed platform that gives certified aerospace organizations access to detailed supplier data, certification statuses, complaint records, and audit histories. By promoting transparency, traceability, and rapid response to supplier changes, OASIS enhances quality management throughout the global aerospace supply chain.
